Shocking news has emerged out of Liverpool as manager Jurgen Klopp has announced he will leave the Merseyside club at the end of the season. The German announced his decision via the official website and social media handles saying that he is “running out of steam”.
Klopp joined Liverpool in 2015 and oversaw a string of remarkable triumphs, including a UEFA Champions League title and Liverpool’s Premier League title after a 30-year wait. He not only won every trophy he played in, he did so in a way that the passionate Liverpool supporters described as the “Scouse Way”.
I am running out of energy: Klopp
Liverpool Manager Jürgen Klopp’s tenure at Liverpool FC will come to an end at the conclusion of this season. His departure marks the end of an era for one of the most accomplished football managers in the game.
“I can understand that it’s a shock for a lot of people in this moment, when you hear it for the first time, but obviously I can explain it – or at least try to explain it,” Klopp said while announcing his decision.
“I love absolutely everything about this club, I love everything about the city, I love everything about our supporters, I love the team, I love the staff. I love everything. But that I still take this decision shows you that I am convinced it is the one I have to take.”
He revealed that he’s running out of steam, “It is that I am, how can I say it, running out of energy. I have no problem now, obviously, I knew it already for longer that I will have to announce it at one point, but I am absolutely fine now. I know that I cannot do the job again and again and again and again.
“After the years we had together and after all the time we spent together and after all the things we went through together, the respect grew for you, the love grew for you and the least I owe you is the truth – and that is the truth.”
A new era for Liverpool beckons
Alongside Jurgen Klopp, his team including assistant coaches Pepijn Lijnders and Peter Krawietz, as well as elite development coach Vitor Matos, will also be departing. Liverpool FC has expressed their appreciation for Klopp’s contributions during his time at the club, thanking him for his unwavering commitment and undeniable loyalty.
Having been made aware of Klopp’s decision back in November, Liverpool’s ownership will have put in place the succession plans. Speculation will be rife on who would replace the legendary German. With Steven Gerrard recently signing an extension with Al Ettifaq, another former player, Xabi Alonso, who is having a spectacular season with Bayer Leverkusen, is expected to be leading the race.
Liverpool fans are distraught at the news but understand that Klopp has earned the right to call it quits on his terms. They are expected to ensure they cheer the club on as it competes on four fronts to give the 56-year old the perfect goodbye. It would be fitting if Klopp’s tenure ends the way it started, showcasing ‘heavy metal football’!
