The President of India, Droupadi Murmu conferred the Arjuna Award to 26 Indian sportspeople on 9th January, 2024. Rashtrapati Bhavan was the venue where the sportspeople were given the second-highest sports honour in the country.
The list of 26 athletes primarily consists of representatives from the Asian Games 2023 and 2023 Asian Para Asian Games where India recorded their best-ever tally. Earlier, the 2023 Asian Games saw India return with 103 medals with 28 Gold, 38 Silver, and 41 Bronze medals. The Para Games contingent, also, returned with 111 medals with 29 Gold, 31 Silver, and 51 Bronze medals.
The youngest winner this year is Para Archer Sheetal Devi (16), who won 2 Gold and 1 silver medals in Hangzhou. Prachi Yadav (Para Canoeing) and Illuri Ajay Kumar Reddy (Blind Cricket) were other para sportspeople who received the award. 43-year-old Lawn Bowls star Pinki Kaushik Singh was the oldest awardee this year.
The third woman Grandmaster from India, R. Vaishali, who is also the sister of grandmaster R. Pragnananandhaa, was also bestowed with the honour.
