Punjab Kings captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bowl first. CSK has had one of the worst records at their home ground. Their start was, as usual, slow with few boundaries. The two youngsters, Shaik Rasheed and Ayush Mhatre, failed to deliver this time, leaving CSK’s score at 22 for 2. Ravindra Jadeja, who came in into bat at no. 4, also got out, scoring just 17.
The real hero for the Chennai Super Kings was Sam Curran. He, along with Dewald Brevis, formed a great partnership and batted until the 15th over. Unfortunately, the young South African got out when the score was 126. Curran continued the hitting and smashed 26 runs in Suryansh Shedge’s over. However, once he got out, it was just one-way traffic for PBKS.
Yuzvendra Chahal took 4 wickets in his over, which included a hat-trick as well. At one point, it looked like CSK would score past 200 thanks to Curran’s 88, but the PBKS bowlers did well. They restricted CSK to 190. The Punjab openers gave them a good start. Despite Priyansh Arya’s wicket, they scored 51 runs in the powerplay. Prabhsiman Singh and captain Iyer kept the required run rate under control.
The chase never looked out of PBKS’ reach. Iyer and Shashank Singh both almost finished the chase in the 19th over. There were indeed some anticlimactic moments when Punjab fans had to wait for five deliveries to score the winning run. Marco Jansen finally scored it and took his team to the 2nd spot on the points table. Things are going from bad to worse for CSK, as they are officially out of the playoff race.
