Novak Djokovic makes his feelings known about being booed by crowd after retiring mid-match at Australian Open

37-year-old Novak Djokovic retired mid-match in the semifinals of the ongoing Australian Open due to injury. He was up against Alexander Zverev, who has naturally moved to the finals and will be up against either Ben Shelton or Jannik Sinner on Sunday.

However, while making an exit from the court, Djokovic faced intense booing from one side of the crowd. When asked about the booing and what impact it makes on his mentality and motivation for the remaining season, the tennis star highlighted how he understands the emotion of the crowd as they expected a big fight between the two semi-finalists.

Which they didn’t get to witness as he retired after the very first set. Continuing his train of thought, the 24-time Grand Slam title added, “I don’t know what to say. People have come; they paid for the tickets expecting a great match and a big fight, which they didn’t get. From that perspective, I can understand. I am doing my best to understand them, but I am not sure whether they understand me or if they even want to understand me.”

Djokovic further opened up about his injury, stating how he knows his body and stopped mid-match so that his condition doesn’t worsen to a greater extent.

Novak concluded, “I know how my body works, what I feel, and I know how much I’ve given to this tournament in the past 20-plus years. I will stop here, so that I don’t continue (speaking) in the wrong direction (wry smile).”

Novak Djokovic retires mid-match during the Australian Open semifinals

When Zverev won the first set by 7-6, Novak moved towards the net and shook his opponent’s hands to retire mid-match.

The move, as expected, came as a big shock to his fans. Djokovic, who was carrying an injury from his quarter-final match against young gun Carlos Alcaraz, seemed a bit uncomfortable since the beginning of the match.

With this, Zverev will now take on the winner of the match between Ben Shelton and Jannik Sinner in the final of the Australian Open on Sunday.

This will be Alexander Zverev’s first Grand Slam title if he manages to outshine on the final day.
