“Stay there as long as possible”: Aryna Sabalenka opens up on maintaining World No. 1 position in 2025

Current World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka is looking to improve herself and her game in 2025. Sabalenka has recently had a brilliant campaign in 2024 as she finished the year as World No. 1 in the WTA rankings for the very first time.

That’s not all, it was also the first time in her career that she won two out of four Grand Slam titles. She first lifted the Australian Open after beating China’s Zheng Qinwen in straight sets with 6-3, 6-2.

While talking about her plans to maintain her World No. 1 position in the coming year as well, Sabalenka revealed how she is not planning to rely solely on defending the Australian Open title but trying her best to stay as long as possible in each tournament.

She said, “I can’t rely on having the chance to maintain the world number one by defending the Australian Open at the beginning of the year; it’s a mental issue. Of course, I’m eager to stay there for as long as possible and work hard for it, but we will see next season. For me, defending the title would mean a lot.”

Continuing further, the current World No. 1 opened up on focusing on herself and trying her best to win not just the Australian Open but other tournaments as well. She even went on to highlight the fact that despite being on top of the ranking and charts, there are still many achievements in tennis that she has not unlocked yet.

She added, “I believe the key is to focus on yourself and try to give your best, whether in Australia or any other tournament, always giving your utmost. I still have many achievements to unlock in tennis.”

As per the 2024 Australian Open champion, although she rarely lacks motivation, she simply keeps herself boosted by remembering her initial days.

Whenever there is some challenge, Sabalenka seems to remember her initial struggle and how much she wanted to be at the top of the sport. This helps her stay motivated and hungry for more achievements.

Continuing her train of thought, Sabalenka concluded, “I rarely lack motivation. When I feel I need a boost, I simply remember where I started and how much I wanted to be where I am now, which drives me crazy and helps me stay hungry and motivated all the time.”

With that being said, Aryna Sabalenka is currently working to defend her Australian Open crown. Would she be able to defend it and bag the 2025 Australian Open yet again, or can Iga Swiatek or Coco Gauff dethrone her? Well, only time will tell.
