Serena Williams, one of the greatest tennis players to ever grace the professional sport, recently dropped a jaw-dropping remark on her Grand Slam title count. As per the 23-time Grand Slam title champion, she would have had 30 Grand Slams, and her sister Venus Williams would have won 15 if they didn’t had to compete against each other.
The Williams sisters are known to dominate tennis back in the day and have 30 Grand Slams (combined) to their name. That’s not all; the tennis duo has bagged 14 Grand Slam titles together as a duo.
Their last appearance as a team came in 2022, at the US Open, where they lost the first-round match against Linda Noskova and Lucie Hradecke. Serena Williams recently appeared at the New York Times DealBook.
When asked to comment on a statement made by a former professional that Venus Williams would have had around 15-20 Grand Slam titles if not for her sister, to which, Serena Williams gave a rather fitting reply.
She said, “We had this rule that if we played against each other before the final, we had to win the title. I think Venus would have had a minimum of 15 Grand Slams if we didn’t play. I would have had 30.”
Williams further talked more about her career; she revealed losing being her biggest lesson.
Continuing her train of thought, she further added, “I never wanted to lose, but unfortunately, I think when you do lose, you learn some of the biggest lessons. And every loss that I had, I needed to actually become Serena Williams, or I would have never been this person—had I not taken some of those really, really hard falls and some losses that, quite frankly, sucked.”
As expected, the comment went viral, eliciting a plethora of reactions online. With that being said, the sisters forged one of the greatest rivalries ever and have faced each other 31 times. While Serena Williams has already retired from professional tennis, Venus is still competing at the age of 44.
