Patrick Mouratoglou issues brutally honest take on Jannik Sinner vs Carlos Alcaraz debate

Former tennis star Patrick Mouratoglou recently opened up about the ongoing Jannik Sinner vs. Carlos Alcaraz debate. For the uninitiated, Jannik Sinner recently won the first Grand Slam of 2025, which is the Australian Open. With this triumph, he became the only second player after Rafael Nadal to achieve this feat.

Last year, Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner both won 2 Grand Slam title searches, eliciting a plethora of reactions online. While some fans believe that Carlos Alacarxz is the next big thing in tennis, others feel the same for Jannik Sinner.

And this has given rise to a new rivalry in tennis, with a question being asked every single time: Who is better?

And that’s precisely what Selena Williams‘s former coach Patrick Mouratoglou has talked about during his podcast.

Patrick Mouratoglou draws parallels between Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz

As per the tennis legend himself, Sinner is not ahead of Carlos Alcaraz at this moment, despite dominating the two Grand Slam titles last year. He further explained how Carlos Alcaraz has won the more important matches and has won more Grand Slam titles than Sinner.

Mouratoglou said, “Jannik is not above everybody. I don’t think he is above Carlos. I think when Carlos is at his best, there’s a real match, and I am not sure who will win. And all of their matches have been extremely hard-fought, extremely uncertain, and Carlos has won some important ones against him.”

That’s not all. The French sports commentator went on to single out the strengths of both of these talented players. While he believes that Carlos Alcaraz is younger and plays better in important matches, Sinner is more sensible when it comes to on-court mistakes and does everything at the same pace.

Continuing his train of thoughts, he added, “Their type of play è different, Carlos is making a lot more unforced errors than him. He is playing with a lot more risk. The quality of Sinner is that he is playing at an insanely high pace, without making mistakes, and that really is his strength”.

Interestingly enough, as per Mouratoglou, Carlos Alcaraz has ‘incredible’ power in his racket and can change his pace as per the requirement and thus remains at the top despite losing the Australian Open in the quarterfinals.

He concluded, “Carlos’s strength is that he has this incredible power in the racket and also the ability” to change pace. He goes at a certain pace, and all of a sudden he speeds up the pace like crazy. Jannik is simply everything at the same pace, which is extremely high, so it’s different. Both of them won two Slams last year, and Carlos, for the moment, has won more Slams than Jannik and is actually younger. So, I don’t think we can say that Jannik is much higher than Carlos”.

With 2 of the Big 3 already retired, now it is time for the up-and-rising tennis stars to rule the court. While Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz are the top two names, many other young players have been making their mark on the tennis world.
