Novak Djokovic recently discussed his evolving mindset as he enters a new stage in his tennis journey. With the Madrid Open on the horizon, the 24-time Grand Slam champion admitted that his expectations had changed significantly.
“Not big at all, to be honest,” Djokovic said when asked about his goals for the tournament. His primary aim was to simply play one more match than he did in Monte Carlo. “Trying to win a match or two, not really thinking about getting far in the tournament,” he explained, reflecting on the “new reality” that he is learning to navigate in his career.
For a player who has spent over 20 years at the top of tennis, this shift in perspective represents a significant mental adjustment. Djokovic, accustomed to competing in the later stages of tournaments and regularly claiming titles, is now facing earlier exits.
“It’s a completely different feeling from what I had in 20-plus years of professional tennis,” he acknowledged. Dealing with early departures has been a challenge, but Novak Djokovic is learning to accept this as part of his career’s natural progression.
“It’s kind of a challenge for me mentally to face these kinds of sensations on the court,” he admitted, recognizing the emotional toll that comes with such changes.
Grand Slam Remains the Focus For Novak Djokovic
Despite his more modest expectations for smaller tournaments, Djokovic’s ultimate focus is still on the Grand Slam.
“Grand Slams are the most important tournaments for me,” he emphasized. Although his approach to events like Madrid has shifted, the major tournaments remain at the heart of his ambitions.
Looking ahead to Roland Garros, Djokovic admitted uncertainty about his form for the French Open but reassured his fans, “I’ll do my best,” remaining determined to give it his all in the prestigious Grand Slam.
As Djokovic adapts to this new phase of his career, his passion for the game remains undiminished. While his goals may have evolved, his commitment to competing at the highest level, particularly in the Grand Slam, continues to drive him forward.
