History has been created by none other than the Italian professional Jannik Sinner. 7 Grand Slams, two titles, and now the undefeated World No. 1, 2024 has truly been an amazing year for the Italian.
During the ATP Finals in Turin, Jannik Sinner officially becomes the very first Italian player ever to reach the year-end World No. 1 milestone. The Italian succeeds Novak Djokovic and rival Carlos Alcaraz to achieve this incredible feat.
While receiving the trophy from Boris Becker, Sinner thanked his loved ones and supporters for believing in him. He even revealed how his mother cried during the trophy ceremony and even recalled childhood struggles and sacrifices they made as a family to now be at the highest level.
He said, “Without the people who are close to me, it’s very difficult. I was very lucky to have these people around me. Without these people, it wouldn’t be possible. I just heard that my mom was crying, which is something very cute.”
Continuing his train of thoughts, he further added, “Only they know from my early age and stages, when I was around 13, how many sacrifices we made as a family. Now I’m standing here with one of the, maybe the most special trophy I have.”
That’s not all; the young professional made his feelings known about the ATP Finals trophy and how you have to be extremely dedicated and consistent.
He concluded, “It’s a great competition between this and Grand Slams. This is a very consistent trophy. You have to play one year of very consistent tennis, so this is for sure a very, very tough trophy to get.“
A look back at Jannik Sinner’s 2024 season
Sinner has had a great year as he became the first Italian ever to be in the World No. 1 position in singles for the very first time of his career on June 10, 2024. Interestingly enough, since June 10, no one has been able to dethrone him from that spot, not even 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic.
However, 2024 brought a few controversies for the young prodigy as well. He was tested positive twice for traces of the steroid clostebol back in March.
He was initially cleared by the International Tennis Integrity Agency, but towards the end of September, the World Anti-Doping Agency appealed for a two-year ban. Despite everything, he never gave up and remained at the top of the ranking.
