Jannik Sinner may have defeated Novak Djokovic in their semifinal clash at Roland Garros 2025, but the young Italian didn’t hold back in expressing his deep admiration for the tennis legend.
Speaking to the press after the match, Sinner shared heartfelt thoughts about the 24-time Grand Slam champion, both as a player and as a person.
The World No. 1, now set to face Carlos Alcaraz in a thrilling French Open final, took a moment to reflect on how Djokovic has influenced his growth in the sport.
“Many things,” Sinner said when asked what he had learned from Djokovic over the years. “I was lucky enough to practice with him when I was very young. In Monaco, we practiced a lot. Every time I asked questions, he answered me in a very honest way. It’s very nice.”
While Novak Djokovic has often been a polarizing figure in the tennis world, Sinner was quick to offer a different perspective. According to the World No. 1, people who watch sports from outside may not know the kind of person Djokovic is and how helpful and kind he has been to up-and-coming young professionals.
“People don’t see how he really is,” Sinner said. “I think people from outside or people who don’t know him have a different picture of him. It’s not like this. He’s a very kind person. He’s very helpful in times when you need it.”
With that being said, there is no denying that the tennis legend has played a quiet, guiding role in Sinner’s career. Whether through their practice sessions or simply watching hours of Djokovic’s matches, Sinner has drawn inspiration from the Serbian star.
“I feel like my game style is… not the same, because we are different, but at times similar,” he added. “I’ve watched a lot of his videos. I was lucky I could share the court with him some time ago.”
Following his straight-sets victory over Djokovic, the Italian remained humble. Despite his rise to the top of the rankings and a place in the Roland Garros final, Sinner still credits Djokovic with shaping his mindset and approach.
“He’s very important for me as a player and also as a person,” Sinner said sincerely. “I really appreciate his kind words because it means I’m improving as a player, which is the most important part.”
Now, with a Grand Slam title within a win away, Jannik Sinner will look to bring everything he’s learned into Sunday’s final against arch-rival Alcaraz.
