Real Madrid again lost another final against Barcelona. The Los Blancos were again defeated by Hansi Flick’s team by one goal in the Copa del Rey finals.
However, various controversies arose after the match over refereeing decisions and the on-field reaction of a few Madrid players. Despite all the buzz and reactions by Real Madrid’s players on some refereeing decisions, Antonio Rudiger’s on-field behavior has attracted the attention of higher authorities.
Former FIFA referee Manuel Graefe has criticized the German defender’s on-field behavior regarding referee decisions. Graefe has even urged the German National team to take strict disciplinary action against Antonio Rudiger.
Many fans on the internet have criticized Antonio Rudiger’s outraged behavior, calling it unsportsmanlike and unnecessary.
During the match, Rüdiger was caught on camera, gesturing at an opponent. Fans have termed this gesture as disrespectful. However, the exact reason and nature of the ache still have not been disclosed and remain unknown.
Graefe did not mince words when speaking to German media: “Rüdiger’s behavior was a disgrace. This is not the kind of example we want our national players to set. It’s time the DFB [German Football Association] sends a clear message.”
Antonio Rudiger has often been criticized for his behavior on the football field. The German player has also faced consequences for his behavior and gestures previously. And the former referee’s comments just support the critics of Rudiger.
With that being said, the comment has created pressure on the German Football Association to look into this matter.
“He may be a strong defender, but discipline and professionalism must come first. If we tolerate this now, what message are we sending to young players?” Graefe added.
DFB Yet to Respond
As of now, the German Football Association has not issued an official response to Graefe’s remarks or the incident itself. However, the criticism has fueled debate over player behavior and the standards expected of national representatives.
With Euro 2024 approaching and Germany looking to rebuild its international reputation, how the DFB handles this situation could set an important precedent moving forward.
