“Not being able to touch it”: Alexander Zverev issues brutally honest take on losing yet another Grand Slam finals

The 2025 Australian Open has its champions—Madison Keys (WTA) and Jannik Sinner (ATP). While Jannik Sinner cruised past Alexander Zverev in the finals, Madison Keys won her first Grand Slam title ever by defeating the defending champion Aryna Sabalenka.

While Aryna seemed annoyed with her unexpected loss, it was Alexander Zverev who gained the most attention from fans. For the uninitiated, Zverev has lost 3 Grand Slam finals (US Open 2020, Roland Garros 2024, and now Australian Open 2025). With that being said, there is no denying that it’s painful to come that close, but fall just short.

And that’s precisely why Alexander Zverev conveyed during his final runner-up speech after losing yet another Grand Slam title, this time at the hands of the World No. 1. Although Zverev seemed disappointed with his performance, the tennis star didn’t shy away from praising Sinner for his impeccable performance.

He further praised the 2025 Australian Open champion for being the most deserving candidate for the victory.

Alexander Zverev said, “It sucks standing next to this thing and not being able to touch it. Congrats to Jannik. You’re the best player in the world by far. I was hoping I could be more competitive today. You’re just too good. You really deserve it. Congrats to your team as well. There’s no one that deserves this trophy more.

That’s not all; the court also witnessed a heartwarming moment between the two opponents where Sinner was captured consoling Zverev and hugged him. Well, despite all the competition, the boos, and the fiery rivalry, it is the sportsmanship that stands above the rest.

Additionally, with this victory, Jannik Sinner becomes the first Italian man in history to win back-to-back Australian Open singles titles. He is also the first Italian man to win 3 Grand Slam singles titles. He has now won 3 hard-court Grand Slam titles.

With the rest of the season still in hand, Zverev will be eyeing to bag his first Grand Slam title while Jannik Sinner will be eyeing to retain his World No. 1 spot and add yet another Grand Slam trophy to his cabinet.
