Alex de Minaur pulled off a thrilling comeback victory over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina to win the 2025 Washington Open on Sunday. The Australian saved three championship points and rallied from 2-5 down in the deciding set to take the match 5-7, 6-1, 7-6(5), clinching his 10th ATP title.
The match was a rollercoaster from the start. Davidovich Fokina took the opening set 7-5. However, de Minaur responded with his signature never-say-die attitude, racing through the second set 6-1.
The third set, however, was where the drama truly unfolded. Davidovich Fokina appeared to have the title within his grasp as he broke de Minaur and served for the match at 5-3.
But the 26-year-old Aussie showed incredible resilience, breaking back and eventually forcing a tiebreak. There, after saving three championship points earlier in the set, Alex de Minaur held his nerve and sealed the title in just under three hours.
Following the match, de Minaur had nothing but praise for his Spanish opponent. In a heartfelt speech during the trophy ceremony, he turned to Davidovich Fokina and said:
“I wanna start with Alejandro. As I told you and your team, you’re way too good to not have one of these. It’s coming for sure. You deserved it today. I just got lucky. You are a hell of a competitor and player. No one on the tour wants to play you. This is not the end. It’s only going up for you.”
For de Minaur, the victory marks his 10th ATP title and 35th match win of the season. As for Davidovich Fokina, the heartbreak was clear. Despite falling just short, he reminded everyone of his talent and fighting spirit.
However, for now, the day belongs to Alex de Minaur.
