An unexpected superstar played a major role in John Cena’s win over Randy Orton at Backlash. That superstar was none other than R-Truth. Despite Cena turning heel, the 53-year-old veteran showed up to support him. His antics distracted The Viper, allowing the 17-time world champion to retain his title.
Fan footage captured what happened after Backlash went off the air. As Michael Cole and R-Truth were heading backstage, they appeared to be arguing. The veteran commentator kept trying to explain that Cena wasn’t the same man he used to be, but the record 24/7 Champion refused to believe him.
While Truth kept insisting that Big Match John was still a good guy, Cole strongly disagreed. As they headed backstage, Truth’s final words were that Cena was his brother. As for the match itself, it looked like Orton was on the verge of winning his 15th world title by defeating his longtime rival. But just as he was setting up for a Punt Kick, Truth stepped in between him and Cena.
Orton looked just as confused as the rest of the WWE Universe when he saw him. The Viper hesitated for a moment but quickly took him out with an RKO. Unfortunately, that brief distraction was all The Champ needed—he hit Orton with a low blow from behind and followed up with a title shot to secure the win.
John Cena attacks R-Truth at WWE presser after Backlash PLE
Perhaps the Doctor of Thuganomics didn’t appreciate Truth interfering in his match against Orton. The 53-year-old veteran once hilariously claimed that Cena was his childhood hero, even though he’s older. Before their match at Backlash, Truth appeared in several backstage segments showing his support for Cena.
After the match, Cena attended the press conference and answered questions from the media. Truth interrupted and told him how proud he was. However, the record 24/7 Champion unintentionally insulted Cena by saying he couldn’t wrestle. Cena took offense and warned him not to say another word.
However, when Truth kept interrupting him despite the warning, Cena hit him with an Attitude Adjustment through the table and walked out without answering any more questions. Fans seemed fully invested in the segment and even expressed interest in seeing Truth challenge The Champ for the WWE Title at the next PLE. Only time will tell what’s next for both veterans.
