Iga Swiatek Makes Her Feelings Known About Grass Season Following Win Over Danielle Collins at Wimbledon

Iga Swiatek may be known for her clay-court dominance, but after her recent win over Danielle Collins at Wimbledon, the World No. 1 seems to be becoming a real threat on grass, too.

The Polish star defeated Collins in straight sets with quite impressive tactical clarity. And that’s precisely what her post-match interview showed. After the match, Swiatek revealed she was completely “in the zone.”

“I was just in the zone, you know,” she said with a smile. “I knew what I wanted to play. I knew I needed to be brave and let my hand do the job. Play fast and proactive from the beginning. You can’t let Danielle play her winners. I’m really happy. There were no ups and downs. It was a good match.”

However, the most intriguing part of Swiatek’s post-match comments was her relationship with the surface itself. For the uninitiated, Grass has long been considered the least natural fit for her game, but now, she’s beginning to see it differently. Well, as per the World No. 4, the ball seems to be listening to her on a grass court too, which is ‘pretty new’ for her.

When asked if she’s finally starting to enjoy playing on grass, Swiatek responded:

“Yeah. It’s much more fun this year. I had some practices where the ball was listening to me — which was pretty new on grass!”

For context, Swiatek has never made it past the quarterfinals at Wimbledon, but this year feels a bit different. It seems like she arrived in London more prepared than ever.

“Today was a good day,” she added. “In Bad Homburg as well, I played many good matches. It’s giving me confidence. It’s a new experience — feeling good on grass.”

With that being said, there is no denying that if she can combine her usual baseline authority with confidence on grass, Wimbledon may no longer be her weakest Slam. And with performances like this, the gap between clay, hard courts, and grass might be shrinking for her.
