Elena Rybakina isn’t one to hide her thoughts, and that’s precisely what fans get to witness when asked about who she sees as the favorite to win Roland Garros 2025. Without any hesitation, the World No. 11 gave a clear answer: Iga Swiatek.
Speaking after her latest match in Paris, Rybakina acknowledged Swiatek’s current form and her ability to rise in pressure moments. “I think these tough matches definitely give you more confidence. Especially when you get further in the draw,” Rybakina said. “She has all the chances like everyone else. She played well in some key moments. She has great intensity. I think she has all the chances.”
Swiatek, who entered the tournament ranked No. 2, wasn’t the top favorite according to many in Rybakina’s home country of Kazakhstan. But that may be changing fast.
The Polish star has already shown that she thrives on clay courts, having won the French Open three times — in 2020, 2022, and 2023. Her footwork, topspin-heavy forehand, and ability to dictate rallies make her a nightmare opponent on this surface.
That’s not all; her record on clay is exceptional. Heading into Roland Garros 2025, Swiatek had won over 85% of her matches on the surface and captured multiple titles in Stuttgart and Rome along the way. She’s also known for being mentally tough, often finding her best level when matches get tight, something Rybakina pointed out.
“She’s been there before,” Rybakina said. “Winning tough matches only helps going forward.”
While Aryna Sabalenka is the favorite to win this year’s title, Swiatek’s chances are soaring high. Even though she hasn’t cruised through every round, the way she’s fought through tight matches seems to have impressed not only fans but fellow top players as well.
Whether or not Rybakina’s prediction comes true remains to be seen, but it’s clear that Swiatek is once again shaping up to be the player to beat in Paris.
