“Triple H saved professional wrestling,” World Heavyweight Champion Gunther drops huge statement on WWE’s CCO

Gunther has openly acknowledged Triple H’s influence on his career and the wrestling industry as a whole. While he recognizes Triple H as his boss and appreciates his own strong position in WWE, he credits him with revitalizing professional wrestling to a significant degree.

Reflecting on his early days in 2005, Gunther recalled how difficult it was for European wrestlers to break into WWE, with no clear path to success. He believes Triple H changed that by expanding WWE’s global reach, creating opportunities for international talent like himself and many others.  Gunther’s rise in WWE has been closely tied to Triple H’s creative direction.

After signing with WWE in 2018 under his previous ring name, Walter, he debuted in NXT UK in 2019 before transitioning to the U.S.-based NXT brand in 2022. This shift coincided with Triple H taking greater control of WWE’s creative direction following Vince McMahon’s highly publicized departures between July 2022 and January 2024. During his brief time under McMahon’s leadership after being called up to the main roster in 2022, Gunther described the experience as confusing and uncertain.

Obviously, he’s my boss and I’m in a very good position at the company right now, but I think, to a certain degree, that he saved professional wrestling, to a big degree, I think.”

Gunther about Triple H

Since Triple H took over creative, Gunther has achieved historic success, including becoming the longest-reigning Intercontinental Champion in WWE history. His career reached new heights when he captured the World Heavyweight Championship at SummerSlam 2024 by defeating Damian Priest. He is now set to defend his title at WrestleMania 41 against Royal Rumble winner Jey Uso, further solidifying his legacy under Triple H’s leadership.
