Wimbledon is known for its tradition and tennis excellence. However, during this year’s tournament, a bizarre moment in Cam Norrie’s post-match press conference left fans and journalists alike cringing.
After his second-round match, the British No. 1 sat down for what was expected to be a routine Q&A session with the media. Instead, he was blindsided by a question that had nothing to do with his performance, the tournament, or even his career.
“Apart from everyone here loving tennis, some of the gossip has been about who Emma Raducanu is dating,” a reporter asked. “Can I ask if you’re dating her? Can we get to the bottom of this please?”
A clearly puzzled Norrie responded: “Sorry?”
The reporter pressed further: “I’m trying to find out who’s dating Emma Raducanu… It seems to be going around all the men’s singles. I was wondering if you’re dating her, please?”
Norrie kept it on the hilarious side, turning it down: “I’m not. No. You can ask her though.”
The moment has since gone viral, with the majority of the tennis fans calling it inappropriate and out of place. Well, this is not the first time Media has speculated about Emma Raducanu’s love life. She has time and again been linked with many tennis star, and most recently with World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz.
Raducanu, who is currently 22 year old, is once again in the Wimbledon spotlight, both for her play and for her much-discussed partnership with World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz in mixed doubles.
But many argue the focus should remain on Raducanu’s tennis, especially as she works her way back from injuries and a turbulent couple of seasons since her 2021 US Open win. With that being said, there is no denying that her decision to play doubles with Alcaraz should be celebrated for its sporting value, and not reduced to gossip.
As for Norrie, the 2022 Wimbledon semifinalist handled the awkward moment pretty maturely.
