Alejandro Tabilo continued his fairytale run at the Monte Carlo Masters, stunning world No.1 Novak Djokovic for the second time in a row with a 6-4, 7-5 victory. The Chilean, who had struggled earlier this year, is now one of the standout stories of the tournament.
Few expected Tabilo to repeat his heroics against Novak Djokovic coming into the match, but the 26-year-old delivered a near-flawless performance. His strong serving and fearless baseline play proved too much for the 24-time Grand Slam champion.
“It’s one thing to beat Novak once. Now you’ve done it back to back. How did you execute?” Tabilo was asked after his victory.
“It’s been a tough year. So the nerves were there a bit,” he admitted. “I tried to remember what I did well last time. Thank God I served well today. It helped me a lot to regroup my game after that first game. It was an unreal match, I think.”
Tabilo’s powerful left-handed serve gave him control in key moments, especially after losing the match’s first game. From there, he settled into his rhythm, playing with confidence and precision on the clay.
The victory is even more remarkable considering Tabilo’s struggles at the start of 2024. The Chilean lost his first six matches of the season and has spoken openly about the challenges he has faced off the court.
“It’s just been some tough times… personal,” Tabilo shared. “But we’ve been trying to take care of it. Match by match, we’ve been getting a bit looser. Just so happy now that I’m feeling better.”
Now riding a wave of momentum, Tabilo has firmly established himself as one of the breakthrough stars of the clay-court season. With back-to-back wins over Djokovic, he has not only revived his season but announced his arrival on the biggest stage.
As Monte Carlo continues, all eyes will be on Alejandro Tabilo — a player who has turned adversity into triumph and is proving he belongs among the world’s best.
